It’s a very good parental move.
Maggie Katz, a mother of two and content creator, recently revealed that she refuses to use the word “pretty” when she lets her daughter wear makeup.
In a viral TikTok video that has garnered more than 67,000 views, Katz explained that she tells her 3-year-old daughter Lila that she looks “so pretty” after applying a little makeup in order to teach her that women don’t need for cosmetics. you look beautiful
“Why do we wear makeup?” Katz asks Lila in the clip. “Because it’s fun and we look fancy.”
When the little one agrees, Katz reinforces that she is “beautiful no matter what.”
“The words we hear growing up have an impact,” she captioned the video, in which she also wrote that “little ears are always listening.”
In the comments, Katz went on to explain that she likes to play with makeup and hairstyles, but she wanted her daughter to know that she only does it for fun, “not because I ‘have to’.”
“And then watching her start to realize that she’s perfect the way she is, but it’s okay to want to play with makeup and look stylish too has been so impactful,” she added.
Other parents applauded Katz’s parenting technique, saying they would use the word “fancy” from now on.
“I’ve been trying to think of a way to explain why I do certain things to my daughters without making them believe they ‘should’ do them,” one person wrote. “That’s amazing.”
“I’m also adopting ‘fancy’ for me and my daughter,” said another, describing it as a “brilliant” idea.
“I started to say that. And now my daughter loves to go to Ulta so we can be loved. (She’s 3 and just loves to hold the bag),” someone else added.
“THANK YOU!!! I do makeup every once in a while for super special events and I’ve struggled with how to explain it other than to say it’s fun to be artistic sometimes. I will use this,” one user commented.
“I needed this as a kid,” exclaimed another TikTokker.
